SPACE
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
When a child is struggling with anxiety, it can affect the whole family. Parents often find themselves walking on eggshells- avoiding certain situations, giving constant reassurance, or adjusting routines to reduce a child’s distress. While these accommodations are well-intentioned, they can unintentionally make anxiety stronger over time.
SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is an evidence-based treatment designed specifically for parents of anxious children. In SPACE, parents (rather than the child) attend the sessions. You’ll learn how to respond in supportive ways while gradually reducing accommodations that keep anxiety in place.
At CAPSS, we offer SPACE in two formats:
- Individual sessions with a licensed psychologist
- As part of the Parenting Anxious Kids group, where SPACE strategies are introduced alongside other tools for supporting anxious children
SPACE can be especially helpful if your child:
- Struggles with separation anxiety, social anxiety, or generalized worries
- Has difficulty sleeping alone or going to school
- Frequently seeks reassurance
- Avoids situations due to fear or worry
By shifting parent responses, SPACE empowers families to reduce anxiety symptoms and help children build confidence and independence.
