Parent Support for Challenging Behaviors

“Kids do well if they can” - Ross Greene, PhD, creator of CPS model

When children demonstrate challenging behaviors (e.g., tantrums, hitting, not following directions), parents may feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to do. Research shows that the most effective way to address these challenges is often through working with parents directly (rather than directly with the child), equipping parents with tools and strategies that make a real difference at home and at school, in order to set your child up for success.

At CAPSS, our psychologists are well-trained in evidence-based, neurodiversity-affirming parent support, drawing on models including:

  • Incredible Years (IY)

  • Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

  • Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS)

These interventions have been shown to reduce challenging behaviors, increase positive interactions, strengthen parent-child relationships, and improve children’s overall functioning. You may also hear these types of interventions referred to as “Parent Management Training” (PMT), “Behavioral Parent Training” (BPT), or “Parent Training”.

Common concerns addressed through parent training include:

  • Tantrums

  • Aggression or hitting

  • Not following directions or rules

  • Sibling conflict

  • Bedtime and daily routine struggles

  • Toileting (encopresis/ constipation, enuresis)

  • And more!

Many children who struggle in these ways may have diagnoses such as ADHD or autism, but a diagnosis is not needed in order to participate in parent support. In parent sessions, you’ll learn practical, effective strategies to help with challenging behaviors, and support your child’s positive development.
